The most common engineering exam that every engineering aspirant wants to get through is the Joint Entrance Exam abbreviated as JEE. Conducted annually for admissions into the best engineering colleges of India, the engineering aspirants look forward for this exam. The following article talks about some of the important information that a student appearing for the exam should know.
Before 2012, engineering aspirants appeared for two main exams in order to get through engineering colleges. One was IIT-JEE through which the students sought admissions to the IIT’s and other was the AIEEE which was expected by a large number of colleges all over India. But since 2012, the Central Board of Secondary Examinations (CBSE) announced JEE in place of IIT-JEE and AIEEE.
JEE takes place in two levels; JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. JEE Mains is a common entrance examination that is conducted by CBSE for admissions into the NIT’s, CFTI’s and other government or private engineering colleges. JEE Advanced is taken by students who clear JEE Mains with an exceptionally good score and seek admissions into the premier engineering colleges namely the IIT’s and ISM.

What will be Paper like? – Examination Pattern
Before one starts preparing to appear for JEE, it is important to understand what will be the exam pattern like and accordingly make a study plan and take it further. JEE Mains constitute two papers giving students an option to choose either or both the papers. Both paper-1 and paper-2 have multi choice questions.
Paper-1 is for aspirants seeking admissions into B.E/B.Tech coursers
Paper-2 is for aspirants looking forward to admissions into B.Arch or B.Planning
JEE Advanced is for students who qualify JEE Mains and are seeking admissions into the IIT’s.
Some Facts about the Exam
In 2014, approximately 13.5 lakh students appeared for JEE Main Exam in 2014 out of which the female population constituted around 3.1 lakh Out of the total number of students who appear for the exam, approximately 1.5 lakh students qualify for JEE Advanced.
Participating States
Earlier a student wanting to get admissions into any state college had to appear for state level entrance examinations, but now the states of Maharashtra, Gujrat, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Odisha and Haryana have joined JEE Main. Therefore the need to appear for state level examinations is not mandatory for the above mentioned states.
Who Qualifies for the Exam?
JEE has a certain qualification that a student must fulfill in order to appear for the exam. These are:
- Academic Qualification: The student must have passed the class XII final examinations or any examination that is its equivalent.
- Provisionally, students appearing for XII final exams can appear for the exam
- It is mandatory for a student to pass all five subjects
- Students who have passed the examination before 2012 are not eligible to appear for the exam
- Students must have a date of birth on or after October 1, 1990.
- Students belonging to SC/ST/OBC category have a relaxation of five years
- The maximum times a student can appear for JEE is three
